What is psychotherapy for depression?

Psychotherapy for depression uses modern psychological therapy to help sufferers overcome Depression.  There are many forms of depression and as such there are as many treatments.  The most effective forms of psychotherapy for depression include, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy and some forms of Schema therapy and Mindfulness therapy.  Which is the most suitable for you and your needs depends on you and your circumstances.

Who needs psychotherapy for depression?

Depression is common and often goes unnoticed in many people.  Most people think that a person suffering with depression will have a flat or morose mood, be unable to hold down a job, avoid social situations and generally withdraw from life.  While this picture is true for some forms of depression it is not true for a large number of types of depression.  Many people with depression will use activities such as being busy at work, going out and socialising a lot, appearing to be the life of the party to mask depression. For this reason it is better to recommend that anyone who has significant periods of feeling helpless or hopeless or guilty or sad should seek help.

How does the process of Psychotherapy work when treating depression?

The first and formost part of treatment is for you to be properly assessed by someone with a high level of clinical experience. Once you have been properly assessed the most suitable treatment program will be recommended and begun.  As with all good therapies it is critical to target the causes of Depression and with this in mind treatments should be aimed at the elimination or management of causes.  In some cases it is necessary to use anti depressant medications however this is determined on a case by case basis.

What are some of the symptoms of Depression?

Their are a number of symptoms of depression too many to completely outline in this article however the more common symptoms include.  Poor concentration, poor short term memory, an overall attitude of helplessness or hopelessness, cynicism.  Other symptoms include feelings of sadness, and or eurphoria, as well as a pervasive sense of overwhelm, anger, despondency and the absence of enthusiasm. Socially sufferers may withdraw but many people go out partying, spending excessively, indulging in reckless and dangerous behaviour, drinking and drug taking.
