What is Psychotherapy for Anxiety?

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a common emotional experience that is caused by our flight or fight response to perceived fear.  Under normal circumstances our fear response forms a protective role stopping us from doing things that will cause us harm or it makes us avoid circumstances that we suspect might be dangerous.  The problem of Anxiety occurs when our fear response is turned on in unhelpful or even harmful ways.  In the case of social anxiety the fear response makes going to a party or attending a job interviews traumatic.  Specific phobias can make simple things such as heights, spiders, needles, pets unreasonably scarry.  General Anxiety can make our entire lives full of fear and worry.  There are a number of Anxiety disorders, too many to mention here however in all of them the most common feature is the flight or fight response, in other words the fear response.
